Symptoms of Depression & Bipolar Disorder

Below are some of the symptoms a person who has depression and/or bipolar disorder may contend with. This list is not all inclusive though and a person may experience other symptoms as well. DBSA Succasunna members are not trained to make diagnoses nor prescribe treatment for depression or bipolar disorder. Therefore, we suggest that if a person is experiencing the symptoms listed below or other like symptoms, to contact their family doctor or consult with a mental health professional. 

            Symptoms of Depression 

                    - Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells 

                    - Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, and/or anxiety 

                    - Pessimism, indifference 

                    - Loss of energy, persistent lethargy 

                    - Low self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness 

                    - Significant changes in appetite or sleeping patterns 

                    - Thoughts or wishes to end one’s life 

            Symptoms of Mania 

                    - Heightened mood, exaggerated optimism and self confidence 

                    - Grandiose delusions, inflated sense of self-importance 

                    - Excessive irritability, aggressive behavior 

                    - Decreased need for sleep without fatigue 

                    - Poor judgment, easily distracted 

                    - Racing speech, flight of ideas, impulsiveness 

                    - Reckless behavior such as spending sprees, rash business 
                        decisions, erratic driving, sexual indiscretions 

                    - Psychosis (loss of reality)
